IMO - INTERPORTPOLICE SYMPOSIUM
March 2023 - The UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Organization of Airport and Seaport Police (INTERPORTPOLICE) held a joint programme in London, UK at the IMO’s headquarters addressing “Law enforcement challenges in the maritime supply chain to improve facilitiation of international maritime traffic.” Opening speeches were given by IMO’s Dr. Heike Deggim, Director of the Maritime Safety Division and Secretary General Jay Grant of INTERPORTPOLICE.
One of the highlights of the forum was the address by the Rt. Hon. Lord William Hague of Richmond and the signing of the Buckingham Palace Declaration on Illegal Wildlife Trade by Secretary General Jay Grant on behalf of INTERPORTPOLICE. Lord Hague Chairs the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales and its United for Wildlife Transportation Task Force to combat illegal wildlife trade. The INTERPORTPOLICE co-sponsored IMO’s Guidelines for prevention of smuggling of wildlife on ships at the IMO Facilitation Committee session in late 2022.

The symposium took place during the forty-seventh session of the IMO Facilitation Committee (FAL 47) with the aims of providing background information on a range of criminal activities related to ports and shipping, including corruption, fraudulent documentation and illegal wildlife trade; and considering, through interactive discussions, ways to better address law enforcement challenges in the maritime supply chain, in order to improve facilitation of international maritime traffic.
Distinguished speakers from the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), United for Wildlife, WWF, Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN), International Chamber of Commerce Commercial Crime Services (ICC-CCS) and INTERPORTPOLICE gave presentations on their initiatives and programmes.
